Applying for a Job Isn’t Enough
As a career coach, I often hear from clients who feel like they're doing everything right—crafting tailored resumes, writing compelling cover letters, and submitting applications—yet they're not getting the responses they hoped for. Sound familiar?!
Most of my clients who are currently interviewing or have recently landed a new role did more than simply apply for the role.
The job market in 2024 is highly competitive, and standing out requires going beyond the basics. Here are some strategies that can help you get noticed and increase your chances of landing that dream job.
Network: First, consider the power of networking. LinkedIn's 2024 Workforce Report states that 85% of jobs are filled through networking. Building and maintaining professional relationships is critical to finding opportunities.
🗷 Start by reaching out to your existing network—former colleagues, classmates, and industry contacts.
🗷 Attend industry events, both virtual and in-person, and don't be shy about introducing yourself to new people.
🗷 For an opening that interests you, see if anyone in your network works at the company or knows someone who does. A referral from a trusted source can significantly boost your chances of getting an interview.
Engage: Another effective strategy is to engage with the company on social media. Companies will look at your online presence as part of their hiring process.
🗷 Follow your target companies on platforms like LinkedIn and engage with their posts by liking, commenting, and sharing content that resonates with you, showing your genuine interest in the company and its work.
🗷 Engagement on platforms like LinkedIn improves your ability to be found by recruiters and hiring managers and keeps you seen and heard.
🗷 Share relevant industry insights or articles to position yourself as a knowledgeable and invested professional.
Get Informed: Don't underestimate the value of informational interviews. Engage in conversations with professionals in your desired field or at your target companies to gain company culture and hiring process incite.
🗷 Conversations with others in your industry can sometimes lead to job referrals.
🗷 Be respectful of the person's time and make it clear that you're seeking advice, not a job.
🗷 Prepare thoughtful questions and follow up with a thank-you note to express your gratitude.
Build Your Skills: Continuous learning can set you apart, and platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning offer courses in a wide range of subjects.
🗷 Enhance your software or leadership skills, or gain industry-specific knowledge, showing potential employers you're proactive and committed to growth.
🗷 Include your newly acquired knowledge on your resume and LinkedIn profile.
Applying for jobs isn’t enough in today’s job market. Taking additional steps to stand out is equally important and can significantly increase your chances of getting noticed and landing the job you want. Remember, it's about making meaningful connections and demonstrating your unique value to potential employers.
